How do I change my payment method for my membership or purchases?

What’s Happening:

You want to update your credit card on file for your membership subscription, or for future purchases. IMPORTANT: The process differs based on whether you subscribed through our website, through the app web portal, or through your phone’s app store at Google Play or Apple.

Find out first where you made your purchase: Did you subscribe via the App Store, Google Play, TheSophiaCodeFoundation.org, or the app’s web portal?

🔧 Step-by-Step Solution

1. 🌐 Website Subscription: Payment Method Update Instructions

For memberships purchased on thesophiacode.org

  1. Go to thesophiacode.org/my-account and log in with your website credentials
  2. Click on “Payment Methods” in the left sidebar menu
  3. You’ll see your current payment methods listed. Click “Add Payment Method”
  4. Enter your new credit/debit card information including card number, expiry date, and CVV
  5. Click “Set as Default” to make this your primary payment method
  6. Optional: Delete your old payment method by clicking the “Delete” button next to it
💡 TIP: Your next billing cycle will automatically use the new default payment method
⚠️ IMPORTANT: Keep at least one payment method as default to prevent subscription cancellation

2. 📱 App Store Subscription: for memberships purchased through iPhone/iPad or Google Play

  1. iPhone/iPad: Settings → [Your Name] → Media & Purchases → Manage Payments
  2. Android: Google Play Store → Profile Icon → Payments & Subscriptions → Payment Methods
  3. Tap “Add Payment Method” or edit your existing payment method
  4. Enter your new card details and confirm the changes
  5. Set the new card as your default payment method for subscriptions
💡 TIP: You can also update payment methods directly in the App Store or Google Play Store apps
⚠️ IMPORTANT: App store payment changes affect ALL your subscriptions, not just ours

Additional Notes:

⏰ When Payment Methods Are Charged

  • Website Subscriptions: Charged on the same date each month based on your signup date
  • App Store Subscriptions: Charged according to your app store billing cycle (may differ from signup date)
  • Processing Time: Payment method updates take effect immediately, but may not show in your account for up to 24 hours.

🛡️ Prevent Payment Interruptions

  • Update payment methods before your card expires (not after)
  • Keep backup payment method on file in case primary fails
  • Enable email notifications for billing and payment issues
  • Check your email regularly for payment failure notifications
  • Ensure sufficient funds/credit limit before billing dates
  • Notify your bank of recurring international charges if applicable
  • Update your account if you move or change banks

Advanced Troubleshooting:

❌ Payment Method Won’t Save
Your browser might be blocking the form submission or your card details have an error.
Solution: Clear browser cache, disable ad blockers, double-check card details

🚫 Card Declined
Your bank may be blocking the transaction or the card has insufficient funds/limits.
Solution: Contact your bank, try a different card, or use PayPal if available

🌍 International Card Issues
Some international cards don’t work with certain payment processors or have geographic restrictions.
Solution: Try PayPal, contact your bank to enable international transactions

⏰ Payment Method Shows Old Card
Browser cache or delayed system updates may show outdated payment information.
Solution: Refresh page, log out and back in, wait 24 hours for system update

🔄 Subscription Canceled by Failed Payment
If payment fails multiple times, your subscription may automatically cancel to prevent charges.
Solution: Update payment method and contact support to reactivate subscription

📱 Can’t Find App Store Settings
App store settings are buried deep in phone settings and vary by device.
Solution: Search “subscriptions” in your phone settings, or contact app store support
